New Territory, 2022

Exhibited at Pratt Institute, Steuben Gallery, Brooklyn, NY

The wide gestures of my hand and limited color palette work along the planes to deliver immersive pieces of the unreal. The overlap of abstraction and naturalism compose active compositions that lead the viewer to question what’s real and what’s imagined. This line of inquiry spans a collection of images that simulate the environments of interlaced forests. In these paintings, the trees become a description of their communicative language.

Trees are the catalyst from which I choose to deliver this message, because their giving and protective qualities embody the purity of what’s provided by the earth. They’re perceived as passive objects tied to the ground while quietly composing and distributing energy. They breathe life into each other by sharing resources among their community. Although they might be almost entirely still, trees are elements of the past that allude to the future.

New Territory

Winding surfaces find paths from which to breathe life into others

Investing their resources into the expansion of such energy

In a never-ending entanglement of purity

Whose goal is to protect what has always been

Enticingly picturesque and almost entirely still

Grounded in the present, composing the future

Among interlaced maps drawn to sustain their legacy

In the freezing winters and burning summers

Breathing shadows and exuding light

Wholly selfless and unbearably wild
